These head coverings or “Sensory Masks,” are the work of Lygia Clark, of whom I believe was ahead of her time. Although these masks appear to be somewhat peculiar, to wear one is even more bizarre. I was lucky enough to experience them in 2006,
when the M.C.A. held the Tropicalia exhibition.
Mrs. Clark created this collection in 1967. Each mask included sized sea shells which covered and hung directly over the ears, a pouch with different herbs that forced one to breath through it, various counterparts and screens to distort ones vision;- i.e mirrors that only allowed one to see backwards, or tiny little shutter holes and the such. They also carried distributed weights which made ones head tip in different directions. The overall effect is almost overwhelming, as it allows the wearer to literally feel what its like to be a monster or something.
By experimenting with deprivation and stimulation of the senses, I believe her studies helped move technology towards virtual reality.
