If you want to see some amazing things done without electronics, you should take a look at Japanese karakuri. They’re purely mechanical dolls usually powered by water and clockwork. The Dashi Karakuri link on the page tells about giant floats with dolls that would dance and play music as the float was pulled along. There’s also a discussion of the impact these dolls had on the development of robotics in Japan. I’m not posting a link to it, but I’ve seen Youtube clips of some of these before. Amazing to see in action.
