one step beyond rapid prototyping

As mentioned in class, rapid prototyping allows for the creation of complex 3D forms through the layering or a base material. Researchers have made a major breakthrough, making the leap from one to two materials being layered in a single object. If this could be expanded on, it should theoretically be possible to “3D print” a final manufactured object. This would have HUGE implications for the global economy virtually eliminating the assembly step in manufacturing. One day you might order something online and print it out at home immediately.
