When Is It Art?

The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and Swiss artist Christoph Buchel are embroiled in a controversy as to who owns an “unfinished” work of art. MassMOCA provided funding for Buchel’s ambitious installation Training Ground for Democracy. As costs began to mount, however, (Buchel wanted a burned out 737 fuselage) the museum decided to cancel the project. But, rather than abandon the work already completed, the museum incorporated it into a new exhibit on the behind the scene workings of the museum. Buchel is suing to prevent the exhibition on the grounds that it misrepresents his work. This reminded me of the class discussion on Creative Commons and the ownership of art. At what point does it become art?
