Surprisingly, the worlds biggest supercomputer is actually a virus. It’s the Storm Worm Botnet, which currently infects between one and ten million computers worldwide. Thats a ton of computers! Somewhere between 1 and 10 petabytes of RAM, so it has access to a crazy amount of processing power. These estimates came from the computer scientist Peter Gutman. Although there are programs out there like Seti@Home out there that can harness a lot of computing power, this virus doesn’t have to ask for permission, which makes it capable of being much more powerful. As the author stated, think about what could be done if the virus writers found better things to do with these cycles then send spam. Many possible outcomes can occur from these viruses, and thats quite an interesting thought.
