In class, we have went over several art installations which correspond with our enviroment. Often times these installations alert us about the ‘cleaness’ of the enviroment. I came across this installation by Charles Gaines, which is similar in alerting us on the pollution of our society. The ‘Greenhouse’ looks like a box but has a satellite picture of Los Angeles on the bottom (floor). It uses live data from a computer reading the air quality of Los Angeles and turns lights off and on in the fog to represent different airborne pollutant in the air. For example, if regional air pollution levels is low, the light gets brighter. If levels increase, they grow dim. Every 15 min. or so the computer takes another reading and the structure will refill with fog to diffuse the lights in a cloud of haze, resemblying air pollution over the skies of Los Angeles.
