Musical Stairs

In 2006, “Tuned Stairs,” (prototype shown here,) was installed within the huge staircase of the building Centre Pompidou, in Treviso Italy.
Conceptually, “Tuned Stairs” was a long stairway that had xylophone tones incorporated into the steps themselves. Ascending and descending scales were then produced depending on wether someone was climbing up or down. By jumping the stairs, one could also produce a song, – assuming that you knew where to jump, (and did not fall.) To me, one of the most interesting aspects of this instillation was that when multiple individuals would take use of the stairs at the same time, a highly unique yet widely ranged chaotic melody would emerge.
