Amy Young, of whom we discussed in class as the woman who makes seeds out of peoples foreheads or thoughts; has a peculiar interest in crickets. I find her works to be quite appealing because while we were building our
741 circuit chips, I learned how to make mine chirp like a cricket. After this experiment, I began to think about all of the many things that could be done with this noise.
This instillation is based upon the assumed living preferences of the domesticated cricket, were they to exist. One gets a glimpse at the life of an extravagant cricket! Entitled “Cricket Call,” it enables a human to call the cricket from a phone outside while a voice activated person-fit to scale on the crickets tiny t.v.- speaks to the cricket (in translated chirp form) from within. The receiver on the phone allows one to hear (untranslated) cricket chirps as well. The complexity of this project is wonderful and I wish that I had my own!
