The Dream Director

Dreams are something that we as a culture don’t completely understand, there are still many things we don’t know about them which is what makes them so intriguing. In this video Luke Jerram and his team came up with the idea to influence or direct dreams with music and sounds. He takes volunteers and has them sleep in special sleep beds that are designed to monitor sleep waves and dreams. As the volunteers settle in for the night, music and different sounds are played continually through the night and throughout the entire sleep chamber. The idea is that that type of music and sounds being played may influence the dreams of the volunteers. Then in the morning he has the volunteers write their dreams, the writings are then analyzed and recored. As you can see in the video some of the volunteers had dreams that related to the music and sounds that were played, while others had dreams that did not relate.
Music and sounds are something that we can all recognize, we all like and dislike certain sounds and music, they have the ability to invoke different emotions and feelings in us. With this in mind the reasoning that music and sounds could effect your dreams doesn’t seem to far fetched. I think this experiment is a form of art in itself in that Luke and his team in a way are trying to paint or create dreams, and dreams themselves can be thought of as works of art. This entire idea of unlocking our dreams by using music and sound is very cool, and interesting. I hope through this project and possible others that follow it we may someday be able to completely understand and control our dreams and possibly turn them into a new forms of art.
