Hacking Electronics = Copyright Infringement?

While not as cool as the previous Wii manipulation post, I thought this was relevant due to the small electronics hacking element. This guy took a Wii remote and re-wired it to control his robot:

Modifications such as this one are quite likely the bedrock of product advancement. As soon as the Wii came out, many curious individuals and engineers were likely doing their own tearing apart and modifying for the purpose of gaining the upper-hand on future product developments. This de-constructing and re-constructing is not unlike what happens when an artist or musician takes images or sounds from other artists’ work and re-packages it as their own. Since much of what engineers and product developers do is largely behind the scenes, I wonder: do they experience the same copyright hassles as artists employing similarly created projects?
