Hacking into your senses

(main article linked above)
I read this article in Wired last year and found it quite amazing. It’s about hacking into one sense to give you another sense. If this technology catches on and can find a consumer base, it could provide a measure of vision to the blind! It could completely change lives. Already, similar procedures are being tested. The following link is to an article about an engineer who has a son with “Sensory Processing Disorder”.  Which means his brain is mis-wired (compared to the average human brain). Though the procedures are a bit different than from the article above, the effect is the same:

Hacking My Child’s Brain

This also makes me wonder if, down the road, this becomes a common procedure, whether or not there would be a “cosmetic” version available for those who would pay money to have their sensory perception altered. Like how drugs effect one’s senses, only a more permanent version.
