Mateusz Herckza is the author of Life Support Systems- Vanda, which was created in 2004. The system is an attempt to first analyze electrical signals emitting from eight Vanda orchids and then use “language modeling techniques” to create a virtual, visual model of the orchids’ output. The model continues to reproduce orchid signals once the plants have been removed or died, an attempt to give the plants a virtual longevity. This compilation of data is stored in a refigured Xbox so the experience can be recreated in future installation settings.
It is of interest to note that the Vanda genus of orchids is one of the most important orchid varieties used for horticultural purposes and thus the produce flower market. Vanda orchids, additionally, are desirable for producing hybrid varieties of orchids with greater aesthetic appeal as well as durability. The Life Support System in essence guarantees a virtual version of the hybrid orchids existence will be preserved for future viewing circumventing the conventional life cycles of the plants.
