In the Southwest and on the west coast, rocks of various sizes are encased in a type of wire mesh to emulate a larger stone structure. It’s a way of using what is readily available to serve the purpose needed. This piece, done by artist Steven Siegel, which sits in front of The Cumming Arts Building at Stanford University, reminds me of that same type of resoursing. The difference in his monolith is that the contents are not organic, but “digital waste”. Interestingly, it is a varation on a theme of another sort…one of Gordon Matta-Clark’s recipes for urban waste.
