“What Time Is It on the Sum?”

The work of Spencer Finch, What Time Is It on the Sun? is currently running at Mass MoCA. Synesthesia is part of the vocabulary used to describe what he draws on in creating works. West is a video installation synching monitors which run on 31 minute loops. The slowly altering images are carefully selected from the John Ford movie The Searchers based on color and duration. The grid of 9 monitors faces a wall which reflects the changing color back into the room, recreating Finch’s experience of the setting sun at Monument Valley in January, 07.
Having been to Monument Valley a month previous to Finch, I understand the extraordinary saturation of color and shadow he’s attempting to recreate. I imagine the work itself falls short of the sensory experience first hand. I do applaud his concepts and historical context. Other works of his are quite enticing. Check them out.
