the el ride home

On the el ride home after class on Friday last week, I took the Red Line home. When I got on, I noticed that there was a picture of original art slid in a slot where the advertisements typically would be. It was a picture of an octopus or squid with a thought bubble coming out of its head with a heart in it. It was looking affectionately at a shark who was viciously biting its tentacle off. I thought it was an interesting, original use of art. Although cartoonish, it wasn’t confrontational the way most art you see on the subway which isn’t meant to be there (i.e. graffitti). It was respectful to its surroundings and was pure expression (although what the artist was trying to express could be debated). There was no writing or authors signature. It was purely open to interpretation and extremely original. I will bring my cell phone into class on Friday to show everyone. It has a picture of it on it.
