Fluid Arm

Well, this week an interesting story popped into my head, a story I read about some time ago. The topic here is a revolutionary artificial limb. I think the creation Festo came up with is a major development in the world of prosthesis. Their unique way of moving the artificial limb is truly genius and purely amazing. This robotic prosthesis sports a “bone structure” which mimics that found on a real live human, and can be moved via the 30 “muscles” built within. Essentially, Festo’s approach to movement relies on “an elastomer tube reinforced by aramid fibers, which contract quickly and exert a pulling force when they’re filled with a blast of compressed air or liquid.” Such application of this system in the prosthesis allows for precise and fluid movement of the artificial limb. With a little more development a prosthetic arm or leg using this system will completely mimic the exact complex movements of human limbs. The future of prosthesis looks really promising.
