SmartSpace is an installation that uploads and arranges various media based on a person’s preferences, personality, and anything that person considers important. The spectator first uses the SmartSpace automated profile creator to list things the person can identify with such as favorite foods, people in history, a favorite era of history, colors, preferred architecture styles, etc. Automated intelligent searchbots then explore online image databases to bring back a host of images that are embedded within the spaces interface to produce screens of constantly changing collages and displays that will appeal to the person based on the profile they created. It gets more complicated when there are more than one person using the space at a time. SpartSpace will then blend each spectators profiles and generate a composite that displays a little bit of everything for everyone. SmartSpace appeals to David Rokeby’s idea of navigable structures because it is an interactive, responsive, and constantly changing interface that can be applied to just about any surface.
