Sabrina Raaf made piece called the unstoppable hum. It is a generative artwork which makes a ceaseless hum that is emitted from electro-mechanic activity in surroundings. The hum extends from the walls, to computers, pretty much to everything. There is a second set of hums which is experienced when someone places bands over their ears. The hum This is the hum of our own blood rushing, the strange high frequency in our ears, and the vibrations of our voice boxes. Generally the hum of a room and its systems as inanimate background noise. People make the hum from the environment they are in. The piece listens to foot steps or people through a geophone and watched through a miniature video camera and lcd display.Than the sounds are translated by the system’s microprocessors into digital clock numbers and allow the piece to generate sounds in real time.
I believe that the piece help humans learn about the sounds that they make. The background hum makes the human become active with the piece. The piece becomes its own by the actions of people. The sounds become their own.
