Light up your piggy bank!

Carlos Cuevas

What you’ll need:

  • LED(s)
  • Resistor(s)
  • 9V battery
  • Ribbon cable
  • Wires (however many you feel are necessary)
  • Piggy bank!

Step 1: Connect the LED(s) to the resistor(s). The number of LEDs is up to you. Depending on how many you decide to use will also determine the number of resistors. I made sure the longer leg of the first LED was on the outside because it would be connecting to power. You do the opposite for the second LED if you choose to use 2 in a series, otherwise you would have to make a parallel circuit connection.

Step 2: Connect wires to the adjacent sides of the piggy bank (LED(s)). Make sure that one of them is connected to the positive LED lead wire that will connect to the battery.

Step 3: Take your ribbon cable and split it in half. Wrap the left side of the ribbon wires together to form a set of “teeth.” Do the same with the other half.
Step 4: Split the opposite end of the ribbon cable and connect one side to the wire that is touching the LED (or resistor if you only used one LED). Connect the other side of the ribbon cable to the ground lead wire.

Now your piggy bank should light up every time you push a coin in!
