The concept of using data as an art form is not new nor is it exclusive to new media. It’s been found before in mathematics with the idea of fractals as displayed by early computers with added color. The beauty and acidic quality of fractal pieces drew my attention into the world of mathematics where I had very little interest in before. I didn’t see fractals mentioned in the article and I found that a bit disappointing. To me fractals seem to be the purest and earliest forms of data art beside that of calligraphy. Calligraphy is a highly beautiful and possibly dying art that I rarely see anymore. It seems that calligraphy has been replaced by digitally generated fonts.
