I have never specially noticed the
distinction between data and information. After reading Mitchell Whitelaw’s Art
Against Information, I started to perceive how data can apply to art and how to
define the define the difference between data and information. I think what
Whitelaw wrote “data is the raw material of information, its substrate;
information is the meaning derived from data in a particular context” can best
describe the relationship between data and information. I’m amazed by the way how
data art can manipulate data to present the artists’ idea. In the art works “The Dumper”
and “We Feel Fine,” the artists use the emotional words that people posted on
blog as the data of reality and then visualize them. By integrating the data into our life, it increases the potential and possibility of data art.
