The artist I choose for my artist presentation is Usman
Haque. Usman is a London based artist, architect, and director of the Haque
Design + Research. Within the world of architecture, he creates interactive
installations in which people are active participants in their environments. In
certain spaces, he has digital projections that function to the sounds of that
space, the temperature, or the smell.
For example, in his project entitled, Evoke, there is animated and very colorful projection of lights
projected onto the facade of the York Minister Cathedral in York, England. It works under the
active response of peoples’ voices in that space in which the colors project
upward onto the building. Since people
have various frequencies, rhythms, and sounds it creates unique patterns in
projections. This similar concept was also applied to a Santa Monica Beach in
which it would create different projections based on the crowd response. Haque
uses architecture as an operating system rather than a static and stationary
space. He manipulates those spaces to create environments in which the person
uses their five senses to control their environment and be aware of what
surrounds them. Along with that, he uses software to create these
interactive installations, choreographic performances, and digital interfaces. Over
the years, he has received recognition and awards for his interactive and
digital art.
