David Rokeby: New Media Designer

I have chosen to present information on the New Media Artist David Rokeby and his works. David Rokeby is an artist based in Toronto, Canada; since 1982 he has been exhibiting and creating art that has been displayed throughout the world, including Canada, United States, Europe, and Asia.  In the beginning of this career, Rokeby focused on pieces that draw in human interaction. Such is the case with his work, Very Nervous System, created in 1986. Rokeby uses synthesizers, computers, image processors, video cameras, and a sound system to create a space where one’s movements controls and makes music or sounds. Later in his career, Rokeby he began to incorporate more video, kinetic, and static sculpture in his work, such as with his work Minimal Objects (with time on your hands). This piece makes use of two speakers, which are embedded in a gray canvas. Above the canvas is a depth sensing camera that emits a layered field of 200 sound objects in the space infront of the canvas, so that when one places his or her hands in front of the canvas the sound objects respond.
