Bill Viola
Bill
Viola is one of today’s leading artists, who received his BFA in Experimental
Studios in 1973. After graduating from Syracruse University he worked in Italy
as a video/tape artist in one of the first video art studios in Europe. In 1979
Bill and Perov traveled to the Sahara desert to take images of mirages. Music
has always been an essential part of his work. He has traveled around the world
with his installations and has won a number of different awards, including the John D. and Catherine T.
MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1989.

Some things that I enjoy about
his work are that they have their own unique beauty to them. In that they don’t
mimic beauty the way classical artists do, but don’t have (what I call) the
“raised eyebrow” quirkiness that some contemporary artists do.
