My last project wasn’t quite working out so I came up with this idea last week. My new project will be a drawing device instead of a wearable. My drawing device will be made up of these materials:
-small fan
-9v battery
-battery snap
-4 pencils
-electrical tape
-2 rubberbands
A quick layout of how everything is going to be is simple. I am going to solder the two ends of the battery snap to the two ends of the wires coming from the fan. Then I soldered the twos ends together then placed electrical tape over the ends so they wont short. After that I placed four pencils on the corners of the fan, I taped them and placed a rubber band over them so they wouldn’t move around. Lastly I placed everything inside a small box so the machine wouldn’t travel outside of the drawing pad.
new drawing device came along later after I decided that my last projects
continuation wouldn’t work because of lack of work time I had. So I switched to making a
drawing device for many reasons. First off, I originally thought creating a
drawing device would be much more interesting rather than a wearable, to me,
because I enjoy drawing and I thought it would be a cool way to come up with a
new technique of drawing. I thought creating a drawing device has many more
different outcomes than creating a wearable would have. Every design or sketch
it will create will be unique. My purpose for creating my drawing device is to
experiment the different techniques drawings could be created by.
I would like to discuss why I chose the materials, structure and functionality of
my drawing device. I came up with the idea of a drawing device first by just
using a small plastic box and attaching a small fan to the back of the box so
it would move across a surface. I later just decided to use the fan itself as a
vehicle for the pencils to move across the paper because it served as both
functions of a motor and a structure to hold the pencils. I wanted the drawing device
to look as simple as possible with not that many parts showing. I like the idea
of something being simple but having an interesting outcome of what it creates
in the end. Secondly, I decided that the structure should be one object opposed
to many objects because it adds to the simplicity I was going for. I enjoy how
my drawing device is put together as one object because it takes up less space
in the area I place it in and because it is something so small yet has
something big comes out of it. A tattoo gun also inspired my project because it
reminded me of how a tattoo gun is one piece and how it moves when it is turned
on. The function of my device is to draw designs or quick sketches when it is
turned on. I originally was expecting the fan to have enough pressure on the
pencils to move but it didn’t work. I attached a small heavy metal piece to the
top of the fan causing it to have a vibrating movement, which also reminded me
of a tattoo gun. The quick motions and sounds it makes when it’s on reminds me
of tattoo guns and the small marks it makes on the paper also has
characteristics of a tattooing machine.
My new budget was roughly around $15 since I was able to use a small fan from the storage closet.
