Creative Switch: Flash Bang
In this creative switch project, 30 green LEDs are activated when the cylindrical object is lowered onto a contact plate. The aesthetics of the piece are influenced by the film Blade Runner and the works of Matthew Barney in Drawing Restraint. The labor intensive act of raising and lowering the cylindrical weighted pipe produces minimal results. Although light is produced through this action it is restrained by the small slits cut into the pipe. This restraint becomes a translation of the restricted exertion produced by the user.
Two inch steel pipe, copper wire, 30 super bright green LEDs, thirty 200 Ohm resistors and nylon cording are used to construct this device. The ground lead is connected to the pipe’s inner wall and the positive lead is split between the two terminals located at the bottom of the device. When the terminals are engaged by the copper mesh the circuit is completed and the light is produced using a 9V battery within the cylinder.
