Interactive project supplies

on

My project is to make shoulder pads with sharp attachments that stick upwards when the wearer’s heart rate goes up. This will be a way of creating a visible defense mechanism like a porcupine bristling when threatened.

For the heart rate moniter, I plan to follow the idea laid out in this video:

For which I think the only supplies I’ll need to buy are the infrared emitter and detector pair, which is $1.95 on Sparkfun. The guy in the video didn’t include his code, but it shouldn’t be too hard to figure it out once I determine the light levels for my resting heart rate.

As for the shoulder pads, I should be able to manage using one servo for each side. I’m not positive about what size to get but I feel like I should err on the side of smaller since these need to be wearable. The idea is that each row of spikes would be attached to one wire, and all those wires could be pulled by one anchor point attached to the servo arm.

(a very rudimentary sketch)
So far I feel like brad fasteners are my best bet for the spikes, as they’re cheap and easy to get, and have a built in base that will hopefully make it easier for them to stand upright. I can get 100 of them for $2.99 at OfficeMax. I do really want the spikes to be not just pointy but actually sharp, so I may try to clip them into sharper points.
Supply list:
2 servos (11.95 each)
infrared emitter and detector (1.95)
brads (2.99)

Um…obviously this isn’t a complete list, but I need to go over some more details with Sabrina and I think most of the various parts needed for making connections and so on are part of our kits or available in the lab.
