Living as form
I enjoy the reading we have in this class because they help me see beyond the usual things I mostly view in my other classes. This article was different because it explains the idea of art being everywhere and anyone can become an artist. As much as I would love to live in the world where art is everywhere and it is highly appreciated and valued, ( here I mean to say that not all kinds of art are very well accepted today and people mainly don’t spend much money on sculptures paintings or decorative art pieces anymore, unless they’re Lady Gaga or just rich) I would have to disagree that art could be found anywhere.
Of course, can look at things surrounding us from artistic point of view and find concepts and aesthetic ideas in almost everything but not everything should be considered art. If iPhones and Samsungs were thought to be art pieces (even though plethora of industrial designers work on the design of these phones which makes them pieces of art ), 90% of people wouldn’t be able to upgrade and no one would ever enjoy the convenience that is the smart phone. Yes, i can’t decide for everyone what is good enough to be art and what is not (and I’m not dying to do so) but I think that it’s an overgeneralization of art to consider everything to be representation of it.
I appreciated this quote by Josh MacPhee “I’m tired of artists fetishizing activist culture and showing it to the world as it were their invention. ” I absolutely agree with this statement because artist do notice small things and details in the world and make them their main focus, which in its turn brings the attention of the audience to the issue.
