The first artist whose work interested me was John F Simon Jr. He creates work with technology along with more traditional materials. In his piece “Data Cube” (2006, gouache, colored pencil, graphite) he captured the dynamics of software screen work with rich colors and complex designs. His work explores different possibilities of opposing ideas (creation and destruction, nature and society). He accomplishes this by using interesting shapes composed of intense colors.
The second artist whose work I enjoyed was Mark Napier. “Shredder” is one of his works that I thought was super interesting. When the wed browser first came to be, print media was still more popular. Napier created this piece to make domains take on a form that is more familiar to print media fans. This piece was created in 1998 and “shreds” the website you put into it. By visiting potatoland.org/shredder, you can create your own mater pieces.
