Artist Research

In New Media art music is also involved, mainly hip hop and electronic music. For example artist Paul Miller also known as DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid uses music and remixes them. He also uses video footage in his performances to play along and connect with the music. DJ Spooky has many titles, not only is he an artist, but an executive editor of ORIGIN Magazine, a composer, editor and author. He has collaborated and helped produce with other familiar artists like Yoko Ono, Dave Lombardo of Slayer, and Chuck D of Public Enemy. One of his works that grabbed my attention is his 2009 Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica, in which he uses video footage and a piano quartet for his performance. I found this piece really interesting because he uses music as a medium, and anything that involves music grabs my attention right away. The concept for this piece is showing environmental issues and he uses the continent Antarctica as an example to demonstrate the drastic change the landscape of the continent has gone through over the past century. I think this piece is important because he uses music, video footage, and some typography to inform his audience of important topics we humans face today, such as climate change.

Mark Amerika is a professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and he usually makes internet art. For example in 2013 Amerika exhibited his four short videos artworks at the Denver International Airport. Glitch TV, Data Falls, New Aesthetic TV, and Second Nature are the titles of his four artwork videos. The concept of these pieces is “his exploration with the relationship of data flow and the flow of life.” I found this artwork interesting because of the strange, bright and colorful visuals. If I were to walk by some glitching screens at the airport it would grab my attention right away and wonder why the screen is glitching. I would be curious, concerned and worried because usually a screen with glitches has a negative connotation. According to Amerika sometimes glitches in tv, computer, and mobile screens are viewed as negative thing to have and they are annoying too. But Amerika shows these glitches in a very beautiful way, for example in the image below of Glitch TV video, it sort of looks like a water lilies Monet painting when viewed from a distance. We could view these video artworks in  negative way, or simply take a different perspective on it and interpret them into paintings, places, food, or human experiences.
