Artist Research

Cory Arcangel
“Holy Fire”

The utilization of reconstructed video game and computer counsels to create new digital graphic art while innovative relies on many old concepts of other art medias like collage painting, deconstructivism, the found object concept, as well as others. I think that these historical modes of creating images combined with the conceptual interplay between the already ancient computer technologies and their rebirth through the current use to make art creates a very interesting conceptual piece of art. That aside, the very simple graphics and nostalgia that is brought about by the piece are a supplementary aspect that I enjoy.

Mark Napier
“net.flag:the first year”
According to the gallery which is selling the work it is an “inkjet print comprised of 7921 images created online by visitors to http://netflag.guggenheim.org” which absolutely fascinates me in terms of the detachment, yet supervision that is instilled in this project by the artist. The idea of the work creating itself through a set of parameters presupposed by an individual creates a wide range of modes of collaboration, new modes considering the expanse of technology. Aesthetically what Napier produces is beautiful and extremely complex. It holds a strange nostalgia for the moments when my computer has shorted out or a tv goes bad. It’s complex yet can be seen as a whole which relates back to the process through which it was created; a complex set of commands for a computer/website to create something singular through mass involvement.
