John Ipolito video response

Finish watching the Ippolito video and discuss at least 2 concepts or issues raised in his lecture that intrigued you and why. How do they effect you directly? Have these issues been resolved since the time of the lecture (2004)?
I thought it was interesting when John Ipolito talked about learning (and cheating) in universities. He described how universities are putting more and more emphasis in becoming closed and private learning environments, as opposed to a more ‘open source’ way of doing things. I think this is very true, as it seems universities have sort of fallen behind with the times and other alternatives of learning such as community spaces or the internet are becoming more prevalent and equally if not more beneficial. The issue has definitely not been resolved since the lecture in 2004, on the contrary it’s likely gotten worse, with universities putting more emphasis on grades and tuition than knowledge it seems.

Another theme that Ipolito talked about was the idea of copyright in the age of the internet and its culture of remixing. I think this issue is really interesting because it’s sort of what makes the internet the internet. The lecture took place in 2004 and already then the speaker was talking about systems of copyright based around creativity and sharing and open source mentality towards the creation and sharing of works. I think since then this has proven to be the driving force behind the internet, whether it be programmers or artists who interact with it. I think the “light-footed” generation of learners and makers that Ipolito talked about don’t have the same views as earlier generations in regards to copyright and creativity, and see it from a more ‘free’ and ‘accessible’ point of view, and that’s starting to show.
