For my final
project, I wanted to replicate the Mimosa Pudica. This plant is very sensitive to touch. When brushed against, its leaves fold up onto
each other. I realized while making my prototype
that this motion would be a lot hard to achieve.

So for my final, I
want the leaves to curl up like a fern.
I will hopefully achieve this movement with muscle wire and maybe some
clear string. The plant will have a
total of 30 leaves that will be laser cut out of the same material I used for
my prototype. I will add some veins to
the leaves with watered down acrylic to create a more life-like aesthetic. The leaves will be attached in a hanging
pot. This pot will hold all the hardware
(ie Arduino). Near the top, and possibly
hanging, will be little LED lights that will be decorated to look like flowers.

To make my piece
move, there will be a motion detector (and possibly a sound dector) that will
activate both the leaves and the flowers.
When no presence is detected, the lights will be lit and the leaves
relaxed. When someone approaches the
plant, the lights will shut off and the leaves will curl up. If I chose to use a sound detector or a
switch that reacts to sound, it will be in addition to the motion detector. So
if the plant is in a loud situation, the flowers will turn off and the leaves
will curl up.

One thing that I will
need to do right away is to create the illustrator file so that my leaves can
be laser cut. I really liked the design
of the old one but I might change it up.
So, my first question for everyone is: Did you like the design of the leaves in the prototype, or should I change
it up? maybe add different lengths or sized leaves?

other questions I have:
Do you think the color of the flowers should be all the same, or
different?
different?
Do two switches seem like a good idea? or do you think it will
overcomplicate the project?

I need to purchase muscle wire and
teeny LEDs, these are the links (I have everything else I need):
