While reading the article “Extended
Self”, written by Ken Rinaldo, I came across the picture of a man with three
arms. The art piece is labeled as “Third Hand” by Stelarc. With this in mind, I
decided to do more research on what else Stelarc has made while using technology
as an extension of the human body. I
came across a video on Motherboard.vice website where they caught up with
Stelarc and talked about his then upcoming exhibition of his works at the Centre
Des Art in Paris.

came across a video on Motherboard.vice website where they caught up with
Stelarc and talked about his then upcoming exhibition of his works at the Centre
Des Art in Paris.
Throughout the video, Stelarc briefly
discussed all the works he has done throughout the years, such as Extended Arm
(1996), Walking Head (2003), Movatar (1995), Third Hand (1980), Stomach
Sculpture (1993), Extended Arm Spilt Body Performance (1999) and many more. However, one that caught my interest and the
most controversial pieces Stelarc has ever made yet, is his third ear. Stelarc
implanted a third ear in his forearm, which he wants it to become an artificial
ear with an “implanted microphone” that will be ”internet-enabled”. His goal is
to broadcast his own auditory experiences to anyone worldwide. Additionally, Stelarc’s work goes hand in
hand with what Rinaldo explained in the article: bodies are both cyborgs and
zombies. We, humans, have always been “coupled” with technology. Technology becomes appendages to our body, an
“extended self”.

Both the article and artist stirred
curiosity and wonder in me: what else can we create with technology? And will
it ever end?
