The Legible City

The very first and most intriguing interactive art piece to me was “The Legible City” by Jeffery Shaw. This piece involves a simulated “city” as a stationary biker pedals their way through the screen. The viewer as complete control of  the direction and speed of travel as they travel the virtual world.

I appreciate the way that the function of interaction is so simple. Bike riding is a sort of interaction that many do fairly often or at least most have done it before. The experience is now transformed from any experience we’ve ever had before. Interaction to me means that you can have control and full operation of a device. This is a prominent feature in “The Legible City” because the user is free to do what they choose.
