The
extended self is not something I have really thought about. Something as
simple as using our cellphones is considered as an extension of ourselves. And
we create a connection with that piece of technology. It
made me think of plenty of other pieces of technology that would be considered
as extended self. One that seems the most interesting is a videogame controllers.
Games that allow you to create your own character is like creating our virtual
self. We refer to our character as “me” in the game and not as “my character”.
The controller would be a way of extension because we are controlling our
virtual self. Haptics can also be seen in PlayStation DualShock controllers
where the controller vibrates and gives the player feedback if the character is
taking damage or in some similar situation. Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR take
the extended self to another level because the device gives the illusion that
you are somewhere else.
