The Infamous Vibrate
By Dane Gillen
For my interactive project I was very interested in the distraction caused by cellphones. Whether it’s from them constantly ringing while your trying to work, or the constant distraction they cause due to the fact that we are all connected by them. When I discovered the Vibe Motor I thought that would be the perfect way to simulate those distractions. Using the ultrasonic sensor and the vibe motor I was able to create code that would activate the vibe motor anytime something came within a 5 inch range of it. Next I had to figure out a way to disguise the vibe motor in an everyday object. Luckily I had a fake book normally used for hiding Red Bull inside it. I cut 2 holes so the ultrasonic sensor could read what was going on outside the book and secured the Arduino and other components to the bottom of the book. I think this will be a funny way to mimic the sound of a vibrating cellphone causing everyone to check their own phones when its placed near an unsuspecting group of students.
