NMA: Week 9 Jesse Schell post

In his video, Jesse Schell talked about the ‘Skinner
Box’ and the consequences it could potentially have in the future. The concept
he talked about where you play a game on the back of a cereal box and get
points for beating someone’s record and eating the cereal along with ‘eye
sensors’ that record the ads you watch seem plausible. The reason why I think
these seem possible is because another material medium is involved. You play a
game on the back of a cereal box, and you get points. You eat the cereal
itself, and you get points. Basically, some other material that isn’t connected
to you is giving you points for whether you do something or not.
The concepts of ads
playing while you’re in REM sleep and ‘digital tattoos’ do not seem plausible
to me. The REM sleep thing was described as putting something in your ear, and
then you see ads in your dreams as you sleep. I don’t think this is possible because
this would have to actively work on a subconscious level – as opposed to
subliminal messages, which work in a more passive, subconscious way. ‘Digital
tattoos’ don’t seem possible either because I can’t really fathom a way for
human skin to work like touch screens or voice-activated applications.
