This project is an evolving—yet permanent/physical—catalog that pulls content from an ephemeral form of communication: Twitter. For the work, I used Arduino, the temperature sensor LM35, and Processing to gather tweets as source material based on the current temperature in the users environment. For example, a temperature reading of 63 degrees Fahrenheit will return tweets filtered by the string “63”. Processing was then used to generate a multi-page PDF of these tweets, which were finally printed to create individual volumes in a series of publications.
I was inspired by Cory Arcangel’s “Working on My Novel,” a twitter feed and book which compile tweets from various authors linked by their use of the phrase “working on my novel.” This project alludes to other forms of post-digital publishing that also ask questions about what it means to create a physical archive using content that was never conceived as such.
