Lichtenstein is one of those artists that everyone knows of but not many people
actually know. The work of his that jumped out at me the most was his rendition
of Bedroom at Arles (1992). As a fan of Van Gogh’s original painting this work
seemed a humorous copy. Not only is the style vastly different, but the items
as well. The furniture for example is much more modern. The chairs made out of
metal or plastic. The pictures on the walls hang straight, giving off a modern
chic apartment feel, while the original is more farmhouse style. This is very
interesting to me because it brings Van Gogh into the modern era. We can’t look
at his paintings the way his contemporaries did, we see them through the lens
of time. This adaptation changes that.

Marcel Duchamp
is most famous for his work Fountain which questioned art and museum practices.
Nude Descending Staircase no. 2 is a cubist and futurist painting. Looking at
it for the first time one eye gets lost in the multitude of lines and shapes.
Upon further inspection some figures begin to form. You can almost see the
woman descending the staircase. What is so exciting about this work is the
abstracted forms in motion. The ways the lines are painted give the painting a
sense of motion and urgency.
