I thought it was incredibly interesting to see the different ways people are making video games now and the themes that they exhibit. It’s true that the video game world is saturated with games involving violence but never about topics such as homelessness, depression, and sexual orientation. I think Twine is a really cool tool for anyone to make these type of games. However, I would have to argue that these are even considered video games, mostly because I define video games as having some aspect of difficulty and reward. I understand that in the end the players receive a reward such that we have a better perspective on these topics but I just don’t see the appeal. After playing “Howling Dogs”, “Begscape”, and “Sacrilege” I feel like I didn’t gain a better perspective. Although all of these topics are really interesting to me, putting it in the video game format made me lose empathy for the “main character”. I think it was because it was just repetitive with a lot of actions and without a lot of emotion in the language. Just because we’re using technology as a medium doesn’t mean you can ignore putting other aspects into that game that would immerse the player more into that world.
