Light-Up Book Creative Switch Project

Step 1) Collect Materials

-1 Book-shaped Wooden Box (with Removable Drawer)
-1 Button Coin Cell Battery Socket Holder Case with On/Off Switch
-1 3V Coin Battery
-1 ft. of 1/4″ Width Conductive Copper Tape
-1 ft. of 1/2″ Width Conductive Copper Tape
-3 M3 x 7mm Flat Head Screws
-Approx. 1-2 ft. of LED Fairy Lights
-1 piece of clear heat shrink, 3″ (1/4″ diameter)

Step 2) Install the Coin Cell Battery Holder

Place the 3V coin battery inside the coin cell battery holder. Next, using two flat head screws mount the coin cell battery holder to your box ensuring the screws are securely bolted into the wooden box. Lastly, close the case coin cell battery holder to secure the battery in place.

Step 3) Screw the Heat Shrink Onto the Box

First insert both the ground and live wire of the LEDs through the invisible heat shrink. Grab one of the flat head screws and screw the heat shrink with the wires into the box. Make sure that both the ground and live wires are exposed approximately 2-3 inches at the end of the shrink. Wrap the remaining LED wire around the box.

Step 4) Connect the Ground Wire of the LEDs to the Coin Cell Battery Holder

Taking your ground (black) wire from your coin cell battery holder, either solder or tightly twist the ground wire with the ground wire of the LEDs, ensuring both of the wires are tightly intertwined. Tape down the live wire of the LED lights to the box using copper tape. Make sure the copper tape reaches the edge of the box and the wire is touching the copper tape.

Step 5) Tape the Side of the Box with Conductive Copper Tape

Using approximately 6 inches of the 1/2″ conductive copper tape, secure the live (red) wire from the coin cell battery holder to the box using the copper tape, making sure the exposed wire at the end is touching the copper tape.

Wrap the copper tape around the side of the box, ensuring it reaches the edge of the box. Use a small piece of the copper tape to extend the connection on the edge.

Step 6) Tape the Interior of the Removable Drawer

Using the 1/2″ copper tape, cut two strips approximately 2 inches in length and tape them on opposite ends of the drawer. Next, using the 1/4″ copper tape, cut an 8 inch strip and tape it to the interior of the drawer, connecting the two opposing strips of copper tape.

Step 7) Close the Drawer

Close the drawer, ensuring that the sides of the drawer with the copper tape are touching the copper tape placed on the edges of the box. Using the switch on your coin cell battery holder, switch it to “on” to light up your fairy lights. Opening the drawer will cause the circuit to be disconnected, therefore turning the lights off.
