The Plausible
In the video Jesse Schell talks about games being used to incentivize people into acting a certain way and giving them arbitrary points for doing so. A couple of the ideas I thought could actually be a reality are the changing tattoo ads and the tooth brushing game he mentioned. Let’s start with the changing tattoo add, the way I see this one working is that someone gets a QR code tattoo that when looked at with the naked eye just looks like a QR code but, once looked at through a phone it changes entirely, it could be a variety of images cycling through or even gifs. I feel this is possible because of how integrated QR technology is already in our society. One good example is the nintendo 3ds is capable of scanning a QR code and it loads character models, animations or extra content.
The other one I thought plausible was the toothbrushing one because like the previous one I’ve seen real world examples of this already working. One real world example is Grush, a gaming tooth brush that connects to your mobile device through an app. As you brush your teeth you slowly progress in the game and the game ends when your teeth are adequately brushed.
The Implausible
The only thing I don’t see happening from this video would be the points for ads while watching television. The reason is that I don’t believe people watch TV to be bombarded with advertisements and if they were they would opt out of watching it. People watch TV to relax but by turning that into a game it would defeat the purpose and wouldn’t be a very successful game. This would just frustrate people more because there’s an advertisement obscuring the screen at any moment. As it is people try their hardest to avoid ads if at all possible, so a game based on them would not do well.
