Jesse Schell’s Talk Review

Much of what Jesse Schell’s talk was quite hyperbolic and scattered. He starts his talk by mentioning how corporations use games to engage their audiences and moves to ‘dream ads’ that persuade the user into buying certain items.  His over all flow and manor of speaking did not help his  point of how technology is shaping society. If I could boil down his main argument is that he thinks that by ‘gamifying’ everyday activities they lose their original purpose.  For example, consider Fitbits. The original goal of a Fitbit was to track how much someone exercised, but now, through the competition aspect,  some people care more about beating their friends in how many steps they take rather than the actual exercise. There is a very good chance that more products will become more ‘game-like’ though greater interactivity, it’s already happening to some extent. However, I think it is unlikely that the future of advertising will be as he describes it.
