Art Against Information Response

The article “Art Against Information: Case Studies in Data Practice” brings up a lot of valid points when they reference how data and data systems, play such a huge role in our daily lives.  Data and the ability to read data has become embedded into how decisions are made and as a result become a very valued skill.  Data can  affect business decisions.  For example, it is seen that statistically there will always be empty seats on a flight, even though all the seats are booked, so many airlines often overbook to compensate for that amount.  Even in politics, gerrymandering is the process where districts are drawn up by politicians.  How districts are drawn up can be affected by a number of things, including how certain people lean towards on the political spectrum.  As a result, districts can be drawn up to benefit a certain party.  Even ads are targeted.  With the help of data gathered, ads on Youtube are picked to target a person’s interests.  What interests me the most is how different data is taken in to create an image.  Sure it is easy to just display the numbers, but finding a way to make it aesthetically pleasing is another thing.  And as Whitelaw states, it is important to find a middle ground in which the product isn’t the main focus, but also the data that makes it up and also the process that went about creating it.
