Literally Me Crying

For this project I made an embroidered canvas crying red. I chose to make it crying, but it can be easily changed to create different emotions; by making it blush, or have lights around its head. Here is the walk though.

Materials:

  • Canvas
  • 5 Red LEDs
  • Conductive thread (any thread will work)
  • Wire
  • 3 metal wall hangers
  • Battery pack
  • Hot Glue (Only needed if using conductive thread)
  • Exacto Knife

First step is to figure out the desired design, and thread it into the canvas.

Take your time, the more time the nicer thread work. It doesn’t have to be made up of a single thread.

If using conductive thread, use hot glue to glue over any exposed thread in the back of the canvas.

Nest, decide where the LED will go. I poked thru the canvas, but you can leave it under the canvas for a hue when turned on. If poking through the canvas; use the Exacto Knife to cut small slits into the canvas, and put the lights through. Leave the legs on the backside of the canvas. Connect two LEDs at a time.

Next is to create connections for the lights. I used yellow to connect the LEDs and battery pack and connected the green wire to the wall hooks.

Depending on what wall hook is touched by the remaining wire on the battery pack, will power different lights. So it is up to the viewer how much to make her cry. I used wire clips because I hung it on the wall, and knowing me, it would fall so it would be easier to connect again. Insurance.

Then BOOM. Art.
