Thinking about getting a brand new heart after eating all those chips, hamburgers and whatnot ? If so, then you’re in luck. Last week French scientists have unveiled a working prototype of a fully artificial heart which is based on the technology of satellites and airplanes. This gem of technology beats almost exactly like the real thing using electronic sensors, like the ones that measure air pressure and altitude in an airplane or satellite, to regulate heart rate and blood flow. Equipping the artificial heart with such sensors allows the device to respond immediately if the patient needs more or less blood. Moreover, the French heart has two pumps that send the blood into the lungs and the rest of the body, making it the most lifelike artificial heart. Previous artificial hearts have been unable to automatically vary their pumping speed and have only had one pump. How’s that for a breakthrough ! The only drawback is the fact that you would have to sell your hand, leg, one of your kidneys and probably you soul to afford ($192,140) this french pumping beauty.
