Over the last week or so the “Robot” conversation has (Oddly I must say) come up between som of my friends and I. We have been talking about cybernetics, the digital space and humans interaction with that digital space. From that came the discussion about robots. In the past our interactions with the digital space has been one that has been simple, it has been very surface. I like to think of it (the digital space) as a window that we have “looked” at then we found out a way to interact with that space with a keyboard, then a mouse. We would effect that space but that space could only minimally respond back. Now we have started to touch that space, and with advancing technology have begun to reach into that space becoming more and more attached to that space. I feel as though robotics is like us reaching into the real digital space and taking a piece of it out and placing it into the real world, and this is when things start to get concerning. We are used to reaching into the digital space and messing with things without concerns but what happens when that digital space reaches into our real world and starts messing with things? What happens when a robot is programed to kill? What happens if it is programed to defend itself and misreads a human’s intentions? There is something amazingly scary about how far and how clumsily we have come in bringing the “digital”, into the “real”.
