sustain life with aquaponics!

Ken Rinaldo and Amy Youngs “Farm Fountain,”
is a collaborative and functional work of art. Through a technique called Aquaponics, (which is the basic integration of hydroponics and agriculture,) this hanging vegetable garden produces a habitat that not only sustains the life of plants, but of fish and humans as well. By creating this unique ecosystem, the fish waste nourishes plant life, which in turn grows and becomes our nourishment. In growing, they also keep the oxygen levels high within the instillation. Plants are embedded within soda pop containers, in order to cause condensation to recycle the water for the plants and fish. Vegetables include lettuce, mint, tomatoes, basil and watercress to name a few. The Koi and Tilapia fish that inhabit the piece are also edible, however I would not recommend eating Koi, as it is more of a fish to stare at.
