This is actually a bunch of PVC hula hoops. This piece was installed in New York, and was designed by Seoul-based practice Mass Studies. The piece was 3x larger than the original one seen by one of the founding member of Mass Studies. In order to keep the cost down hula hoops and zip ties were used, and the piece was assembled by volunteers. A week after the launch of the anniversary festival ( for which the project was made), electro-luminescent wire was embedded in the hoops so the dome would glow at night.
I love the simple materials and construction this piece utilizes. And again, the fact that it uses hula hoops reminds me soo much of innocent childhood fun and beauty. I especially appreciate the electro-luminescent wire; it definitely adds life to the piece! This electro-luminescent wire makes me want to use it in one of my projects as well. Hmmm…… : )
